For over 45 years, Intensa Language Institute has been a leader in English education and language assessment administration in Costa Rica. With a strong commitment to educational quality and innovation, Intensa has empowered countless students to pursue new academic and professional opportunities—both locally and globally. At the heart of this mission is Andrea Barboza, Intensa’s academic director and center exam manager, who has dedicated the past 18 years to transforming the English language learning experience.

Now, as one of Costa Rica’s most experienced MET exam centers, Intensa is not only supporting local students—it’s also setting a standard that other institutions across Latin America can aspire to.

A Journey of Growth and Impact

“I started as a teacher,” Barboza said, “then became a supervisor, and now I’m honored to serve as the academic director. Every role has been a chance to grow and contribute to student success.”

Barboza’s academic and professional credentials are just as impressive. With degrees in English teaching and educational administration, and a master’s in public administration with a focus on diplomacy, she brings a unique perspective to language education—one that blends policy and international collaboration. Her contributions include consultations with the Costa Rican Ministry of Education and technical studies that have helped shape how English proficiency is assessed nationwide.

Over a Decade of MET

Intensa has offered MET for over 13 years, and Barboza emphasizes its relevance and reliability:

“What stands out about MET is its practical focus. It evaluates how people use English in real-world scenarios—academically, socially, and professionally. It’s also backed by the University of Michigan, giving it international credibility,” Barboza said.

For many learners, MET is more than an exam—it’s a turning point. From earning international scholarships to landing promotions at work, Barboza has seen firsthand how this certification changes lives.

“One student was able to study abroad thanks to her MET certification. Others have earned raises or new job opportunities because companies recognize MET as a valid proof of their skills,” Barboza said.

A Model for Other Centers

Intensa’s comprehensive approach to language learning includes intensive and semi-intensive programs, private lessons, corporate training, conversation clubs, and classes in English, Portuguese, and Spanish for foreigners. With flexible formats, students can take the test from anywhere in the world (even at home), which is removing barriers and increasing access to international certification.

As an Authorized Test Center for MET, Intensa serves hundreds of candidates each year. Most are seeking a certification that validates their language ability for study or career advancement.

“They come in motivated,” Barboza said. “Some are nervous at first, but when they see their results, they feel proud. MET helps them see how far they’ve come.”

This is the kind of success that other language centers across Latin America can achieve too.

“We encourage other institutions to offer MET. It’s a high-quality assessment tool that reflects real communication, and it truly makes a difference in students’ lives,” Barboza said.

Global Reach, Local Heart

Rooted in Costa Rica and connected to the world, Intensa continues to expand access to English education through online courses and international certifications. As a proud member of Esencial Costa Rica, Costa Rica’s official brand promoting sustainability, innovation, and national pride, they’re helping to strengthen local talent and open global doors.

Whether a student needs to certify their English skills or an educational institution is seeking to offer meaningful assessment tools, Intensa’s experience with MET demonstrates what’s possible.
