MET Go! is the new, multilevel exam for pre- and early-teen learners from Michigan Language Assessment. One key feature that differentiates MET Go! from other exams is the personalized feedback that test takers receive. In part one of this two-part series, we explore how MET Go! individualized score reports can motivate learners and contribute to better language learning.

Developed for students ages 11 to 15, MET Go! is a multilevel exam that aligns to levels A1 to B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a scale that expresses language ability in the form of can-do statements. MET Go! was designed to offer personalized reports for each test taker. Based on the test taker’s pattern of correct and incorrect answers, the feedback is specific to each individual’s language learning journey.

When MET Go! test takers receive their results, they are given a score report. The report provides numerical scores that reflect the CEFR level for each skill area and feedback about the test taker’s ability in each tested skill: listening, reading, writing, and (as an option) speaking. The first feedback section (About Your English) describes the skills and subskills a test taker can do well (e.g. reading for main ideas, understanding details, making connections between ideas). The second part (Things to Do) suggests steps for test takers to keep improving their English proficiency. This combination of score and pinpointed feedback is one of the features that differentiates MET Go! from other proficiency exams in a way that makes it a valuable assessment tool for learners and teachers.

Combining encouragement with practical suggestions makes the test-taking experience more positive and rewarding. Indeed, MET Go! rewards each test taker for their language achievement. The MET Go! score reports and feedback motivate learners ages 11 to 15 to continue improving their English while strengthening their confidence in their accomplishments.
