Michigan Language Assessment is pleased to announce the update of two trusted exams: the Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE) and the Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE). The test updates will reflect feedback from test users, changes to the test-taker population, and new thinking in language assessment.

Test users can be assured that the updated exams will remain at the same level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and the overall level of difficulty and standards will not change. The revised exams will be offered for the first time in May 2021. Until then, the tests will remain exactly the same.

The proposed changes will offer the following benefits to stakeholders:

  • More accessible: More topics and scenarios suitable for a younger demographic
  • Coherent progression: More task type commonality between ECCE and ECPE
  • Improved coverage: More testing of pragmatics and intertextuality at ECPE level
  • Increased efficiency: Reduced total number of items
