The sample tests for the revised Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE) and the Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE) are now available. As announced in June 2019, Michigan Language Assessment is revising the ECCE and ECPE to improve the exam experience for test takers and administrators while maintaining the high quality that is expected of the Michigan Tests. While the level of difficulty and the standards will not change, the topics and scenarios will be more suitable for a younger demographic. The total number of items will be reduced, and commonalities between task types will result in a more coherent progression between ECCE and ECPE. These changes reflect feedback from test users, changes to the test-taker population, and new thinking in language assessment.
As we move toward the exam launch date scheduled for May 2021, we offer these new sample tests for test center administrators, teachers, and others who are interested in the revised exams. The revised ECCE and ECPE sample tests are full-length samples that include a test booklet with the listening and reading sections of each test, separate files with writing and speaking prompts for each test, audio files for the listening sections, and a sample answer sheet. Additionally, there are sample responses with commentary for the speaking and writing sections of both tests.
