On October 24, 2024, the Texas Board of Nursing voted to approve the Michigan English Test (MET) as an appropriate English proficiency exam for internationally educated licensure applicants taking the NCLEX Ⓡ exam through Texas. It was determined that healthcare professionals will need a passing score of 55 or higher, with a minimum speaking section score of 55. Texas, the second most populous state, is now the 28th state to recognize MET, showing a large growth in recognition as U.S. healthcare staffing shortages continue to be bolstered by international nurses.
MET is recognized by numerous healthcare and government organizations critical to international nurse mobility, such as HRSA, CGFNS International, and Josef Silny & Associates.
“This recognition is further validation of MET as a secure, trusted, and reliable language proficiency exam,” said Sharon Harvey, CEO of Michigan Language Assessment.
Texas Health and Human Services reported that, between 2022 and 2036, the projected foreign trained registered nurse demand is expected to increase in all settings, the largest of which will be nursing homes.
