The Michigan English Test Earns Recognition from Australia’s Department of Home Affairs
ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN — The Commonwealth of Australia’s Department of Home Affairs has accepted Michigan English Test (MET) scores as proof of English proficiency for Australian visa purposes.
This acceptance, beginning for MET tests taken August 7, 2025, or later, paves the way for MET to be used as evidence of English language proficiency for Australian visa purposes. Already widely used and trusted in the Americas, this acceptance affirms the validity, reliability, and security of MET, and makes the exam available to people hoping to live, work, and study in Australia.
“We are proud that Michigan Language Assessment has been approved by the government of Australia for MET to be used for Australian visa purposes,” said Sharon Harvey, CEO of Michigan Language Assessment. “This recognition is a clear acknowledgment of the validity and reliability of MET, and of its value in assessing and certifying English language skills.”
A Rigorous Path to Recognition
To earn this status, MET underwent an extensive validation process. The exam was carefully evaluated against Australia’s English-language standards, including a full technical review and a concordance study with IELTS Academic, which is available on Michigan Language Assessment’s website.* This process ensures MET provides secure, reliable, and valid results that meet the Department of Home Affairs’ requirements for immigration and educational purposes.
“Every aspect of MET, from test design and item development to psychometric validation and ongoing monitoring, is built to meet the highest international standards,” said Mika Hoffman, director of assessment at Michigan Language Assessment. “Our team takes great pride in creating an exam that is fair, secure, and valid. This recognition from the Department of Home Affairs confirms the strength of our research, security protocols, and alignment studies—and that MET delivers results institutions and agencies can rely on for high‑stakes decisions.”
A Global Standard with Local Impact
Launched in 2009 and enhanced with a secure digital version in 2021, MET has established a strong reputation for accuracy, integrity, and accessibility, offering a user‑friendly format that makes registration, scheduling, and test‑taking simple and convenient for test takers worldwide.
Trusted by government agencies, U.S. boards of nursing, universities, and employers, MET is recognized globally as dependable proof of English proficiency. This multi-level, four-skill test is designed for high-stakes academic and professional use. It is widely accepted for university admissions and scholarships, skilled migration and occupational visas, and career advancement or employment requirements.
