For more than a decade, Centro Colombo Americano Armenia has served as a bridge between Colombia and the United States, promoting cultural understanding through language, education, and community engagement. The center is part of the American Spaces network, a U.S. government-supported program that promotes cross-cultural exchange. It offers learners and professionals many ways to improve their English and engage with the global community.

A Hub for Language and Culture

Located in Armenia, Quindío, the center’s mission is to foster cross-cultural understanding. Its programs include English language courses for children, teens, and adults, a bilingual library with both print and digital resources, and a maker space for creative exploration. The center also hosts cultural events featuring both U.S. and Colombian artists, emphasizing collaboration and artistic exchange.

“We aim to promote cultural understanding between the U.S. and Colombia,” said Martha Román Ospina, Coordinator of International Affairs at Colombo Americano Armenia. “Our bilingual library and cultural programming make language learning part of a larger experience—one that connects communities.”

Promoting Higher Education Opportunities

Colombo Americano Armenia also houses an EducationUSA advising center, helping students navigate pathways to higher education in the United States. Through one-on-one advising and outreach visits to other cities, the center provides essential guidance to aspiring students.

“When U.S. university representatives visit our center, those sessions are always popular,” Román Ospina said. “Students love being able to speak directly with someone from the institution. It makes their goals feel within reach.”

Administering MET

The center has been an official test center for MET for more than a decade and was among the first in Colombia to transition to the digital version. Today, MET is also used as an exit exam for the center’s adult English program. Students are required to complete the listening and reading sections to graduate, with the option to take all four skills.

“For us, MET is a trusted measure of English proficiency,” Román Ospina noted. “Our teachers take it, too, so they understand its quality. The digital format has made test administration much easier and more efficient.”

She added that MET stands out for its reliability and strong academic reputation, now recognized by more institutions worldwide than ever before.

Meeting Local Needs and Building Global Skills

While many students take MET to meet university language requirements, the center also sees growing interest from professionals, particularly in healthcare, who recognize the value of English for international opportunities. Román Ospina and her team actively encourage participation in English learning among nurses and medical students, emphasizing that proficiency can open new doors.

“In Colombia, there’s strong demand for healthcare professionals,” she explained. “They work hard and love what they do, but international opportunities could give them better conditions. English is key to accessing those.”

Expanding Access Through Innovation

Looking ahead, Colombo Americano Armenia plans to expand its online English courses to reach more learners across Colombia. As part of the American Spaces network, the center continues to collaborate closely with the U.S. Embassy in Colombia, running inclusive programs such as the Access Program, which provides English education for students from underserved communities.

“When someone from the U.S. visits or leads a session, it really excites our community. It reminds everyone that English is more than just a subject—it’s a connection to the world,” Román Ospina said.

The center also looks forward to continuing their partnership with the local Secretaries of Education to organize academic and cultural initiatives, such as spelling bees and teacher training workshops. Its ongoing collaboration with Michigan Language Assessment ensures that students and educators alike can access trusted English proficiency tools aligned with international standards.

Continuing the Connection

Colombo Americano Armenia is an example of how language centers can strengthen global ties. From English instruction and standardized testing to cultural outreach and advising, the organization continues to empower Colombian learners to expand their horizons.
