General MET FAQs

  • MET tests all four language skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Most recognizing organizations require that test takers choose the 4-skill exam, but a shorter, 2-skill version of MET is available (listening and reading).

  • MET pricing varies. If you are taking MET at one of our Authorized Test Centers, consult them for pricing information. If you are taking MET remotely (or at a Prometric testing site),  you can check the price of your MET and other fees on our MET Pricing page.

  • The MET registration fee covers the registration for the test as well as access to test accommodations, digital score reports, and sharing your test results with unlimited institutions. See the cost of additional services on our MET Pricing page.

  • Yes. If you think that you didn’t demonstrate your best performance on the Listening, Reading, or Writing Sections of the test, you are eligible for a retake with our 4-skill MET exam. When you receive your preliminary results, you can sign up to take only one section again. The best of your two scores for that section will be reported with your final results. An indicator in the score report will show that you retook that section of the test.

  • If you need to take MET again, you can schedule another test date at your convenience. We recommend using your score report to identify gaps and develop your English skill(s) before taking the exam again.

  • You can register for MET directly with your local test center. Find a test center near you.

You can also register on our Michigan Customer Portal. Follow the steps below:

    1. Create a profile.
    2. Fill out our registration form.
    3. Pay for your exam.
    4. Schedule your test date.
  • MET is offered as a digital 4-skill exam in test centers or at home in some countries. If you plan to use your MET results to apply for nursing licensure in the U.S., you will need to take MET in an Authorized Test Center or Prometric test center as required by the federal government, certification agencies, and local state boards of nursing. If you plan to use MET to apply for an Australian visa to live, work or study, you must take MET at a test center. MET is also offered as a shortened, digital 2-skill version at test centers.

  • Only the 4‑skill MET taken at a test center after August 7, 2025, is considered for Australian visa purposes.

  • Test takers have 155 minutes to complete the 4-skill test. Additional time is needed for the secure check-in process. Please note the actual length of the exam varies for each test taker. Test takers complete tasks at their own pace within the allotted time available.

  • During the Speaking Section of MET, test takers record their oral responses to the speaking prompts. Test takers listen to and read the questions, then are asked to start speaking. The audio-only responses are automatically recorded. A description of the Speaking Section can be found in our MET preparation resources

  • Michigan Language Assessment’s Authorized Test Centers and Prometric test centers administer MET. You can find a complete list of centers here.

  • Test Sessions are sessions in which the test center room has been reserved for any candidate taking MET at that time. You have six months to sign up for a test session after purchasing your MET.

Individual Testing Rooms are widely available at most Prometric test centers, but you must sign up for a test date within three weeks of purchasing your MET.

Search for available test sessions for either of these options using Prometric’s scheduling software.

  • To confirm the date and time of your appointment, you can visit the ProScheduler website. The initial link you used to book your appointment also enables you to confirm it. You’ll find a “Confirm” link on the left-hand navigation.

  • To take MET at home you will need the following equipment:

    • laptop or desktop computer (Chromebooks, phones, and tablets are not supported at this time). Windows operating systems and Mac iOS 10.13 or higher are supported.
    • web camera
    • speaker or headphones that are wired
    • microphone
    • internet access (2.25 mbps minimum for test player)
    • Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge internet browser
  • After registration and payment are completed for MET, you will receive an email with the subject line “Schedule Your Michigan Test.” This email will include your eligibility number, which you’ll need to schedule your test.

  • Once your MET has been scheduled, you will receive a confirmation email directly from Prometric. This email will include your confirmation number, which will be needed to take your exam.

  • We do not offer support or proctoring services in any language other than English at this time.

  • If you have technical issues opening ProProctor, or you have an issue during your test, contact Prometric’s Technical Support directly with the following options:

  • Complete MET policies and procedures are available on our policies and procedures page.

  • MET is available year-round to provide the best service to our test takers. You can choose almost any day of the week to take MET.

  • The Listening and Reading Sections of the test are scored using automated scoring procedures. Certified raters grade the Speaking and Writing Sections.

  • MET results are typically available within 5 days of submitting your exam. You will receive a digital score report and certificate. A paper certificate is available upon request.

  • When you receive your results through the customer portal, you will indicate where you want Michigan Language Assessment to send them. Score reports will be sent to the organizations you list at no extra charge.

  • The MET score report has different sections:

    • your personal information: first and last name
    • test day photo
    • the city and country where the test was administered
    • the date when you took the test
    • your MET overall score and corresponding CEFR level
    • your section scores and corresponding CEFR levels
    • guidelines to interpret the results

Your overall score is an average of the section scores. It shows your current level of English proficiency.

  • Our refund policy is listed on our policies and procedures page.

MET Preparation FAQs

  • It’s very simple to prepare for MET. MET is designed to evaluate English proficiency from high beginner to advanced levels of proficiency: A2 to C1 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). You need to be familiar with the sections of MET and the digital format of the tasks. You can prepare for MET by developing your listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills in English. At all levels of the exam, the tasks are very similar to the ones you find in English courses and textbooks. We offer a variety of free test preparation materials to help you do your best on test day.

  • Our test preparation resources page has sample tests and other free study tools. You can also visit our YouTube channel @MichiganLanguageAssessment and follow us on social media for additional free resources, including tutorial videos, webinars, and practice activities.

Information for Recognizing Organizations

  • Michigan Language Assessment partnered with Prometric to securely offer MET at home using artificial intelligence (AI) monitoring and live proctors. Security measures are implemented before, during, and after the test administration. Prometric’s ProProctor platform detects and blocks inappropriate keystrokes and tracks eye and head movements. Prometric’s proprietary web browser helps prevent candidates from accessing aid via other programs or being able to screen capture exam content. Prometric’s human proctors monitor the administration of the entire exam. Live proctors and AI technology help to identify any suspicious candidate behavior and actions.

  • Recognizing organizations can verify or receive MET results securely via the Michigan Customer Portal.

    1. Administrators create an institutional account and add additional authorized reviewers to their accounts, thereby granting them access to login and verify scores.
    2. Administrators can then log into our Michigan Customer Portal to access their inbox of results shared by our test takers.
    3. Administrators may also log into the portal and input a unique test taker identifier code to verify a result they have received externally from a test taker.
    4. Administrators may coordinate with their IT team to link their system to the Michigan Customer Portal using the API documentation available on the customer portal. This option will enable passive receipt of test scores submitted by our test takers.
  • The MET score report includes distinct sections:

    • test taker’s personal information: first and last name
    • test taker’s test day photo
    • the city and country where the test was administered
    • the date when the test was taken
    • your MET overall score and corresponding CEFR level
    • test taker section scores and corresponding CEFR levels
    • guidelines to interpret the results

The overall score is an average of the section scores. It shows the test taker’s current level of English proficiency.

  • MET is widely accessible to test takers almost anywhere in the world. They can take the 4-skill MET at a local Authorized Test Center, Prometric test center, or remotely from their home in some countries. The 2-skill MET is only offered at an Authorized Test Center.

  • Michigan Language Assessment supports recognizing organizations with guidelines and standard-setting information to interpret results of the Michigan Tests and to select the right level for admission, certification, or licensure purposes.

Michigan Language Assessment can also offer assessment literacy workshops for the institution’s teams. Recognizing organizations are also featured on our website and social media channels, and are invited to participate in webinars and other events, thus enhancing their international visibility and appeal to a wider pool of applicants.
